Cloes' nudes are an expression of the human spirit, a response to the human condition in all its forms, soulful solitary and brooding. She always works from life as it is the dynamic of working with the model that feeds the emotional intensity in the mark making and informs the moulding of the form into abstract shapes and planes that make up the whole. It is the putting on and essentially the taking off that give her charcoal and pastel drawings the power and vitality that make them stand out. She works fast in order to retain the vitality of the pose, to engage the energy of the model with her own passion for the work. The speed is dictated by the difficulty of the pose, if it is a very hard pose she works with great intensity to capture it before it is lost. Much of the work is disregarded as a result. Knowing when to stop is a vital part of the process. Even the more restful reclining poses are painted with relative intensity in order to capture the transient epherial quality of a private moment. These are paintings mainly of women by a woman, and as such they are images as seen from the inside out, they are sensual but not sexual. Sometimes romantic but not idealised, these are real women as seen by a woman who can empathise with and understand the nature, joys and sorrows of being a woman. Especially since the birth of her son Finn, she has a new found connection with the state of woman and the wonders of the human body, its basic human role in the creative cycle. |
